In defense of makeup...

Ima say this again for the people in the back:
Stop shaming women for wearing makeup. *(this statement applies to men who wear makeup too, but that is a different post...)

What's that you say?? Women look better without makeup? Well yes, maybe they do!
But that is not for YOU to decide. I repeat, it is not for YOU to decide.
Whether or not a particular woman wears makeup is 100% her choice. And I guarantee you she has heard
"Oh but you're so naturally pretty! Why would you cover it with all of that makeup?? You look so much better/prettier/younger without it!!"

Just stop.

Women wear makeup for many reasons, but all of them boil down to this:
Because she WANTS TO. Even those who joke about how "bad" they look without it and say that they need it are really just choosing the aesthetic that they feel the most comfortable with. And yes, we could go into the self-esteem issues (low or high!) that are underlying a woman's belief that she "needs" makeup but again, it is not for you to decide what is best for her. FULL STOP.
It is no different than shaming a woman because her shirt is cut too low or her shorts are too short or her ass is too big for those pants. Leave women's appearances alone.

And for my "Natural" women out there who just don't like how makeup feels/looks/costs/what it stands for, I feel you boo!! You rock that naturally gorgeous cosmetic free face! I love it! You look amazing! *This means you don't have to leave a comment about why you choose not to wear makeup or feel like you need to explain your position or defend it. You don't. Your face, your choice. I get it*

I've worked in the beauty industry for 19 years now, and a good portion of that has been spent as a makeup artist. I've done makeup for fashion shows, weddings, proms, homecoming, photo shoots, school plays, Halloween, birthday parties and zombie walks (yes, zombie walks). I've worked on Natural Girls, Lipstick Lesbians, men, little girls, women who never leave the house without a full face on and everyone in between. And the common factor, in all of these experiences, is that the client always leaves with makeup that makes them happy. That is literally the entire point: feeling happy.

When a woman dedicates time out of her day to slap on a little mascara and a red lip, do you honestly think she wants to hear that she wasted her time because YOU think she looks better without it?? Why don't you just go ahead and tell her that her outfit is ugly too.

Look, I get it. No one NEEDS makeup. And maybe the finished face doesn't work for you. But the bottom line is that is the face that woman has chosen to put forward into the world that day because she likes it. It is FOR HER. So ease up on the "compliment" that she doesn't need it or looks better without it, because regardless of the intent, the result is insulting.

Signed,
The proud owner of a whole lotta lipstick.
