Summer hair tips
Summer time brings sun and fun! And also heat, humidity, frizz and dryness to our hair. I try to plan strategically to maximize style and minimize styling time. Here are some of my tips to help your sanity and keep you looking cute in the heat.
1. Leave in Conditioner + moisturizing oil = perfect summer product cocktail for wet hair.
Whether your hair is curly or straight, try to stay away from the blow dryer during the summer. It makes you hot and sweaty, plus the heat zaps the moisture from your hair. A drop or two of oil added to a cream based leave in conditioner is exactly what our hair needs in the summer. If your hair is curly or wavy, after you add the products just twist sections around your finger to encourage the natural texture and then let it air dry. If it it straight, then comb the product through and leave it alone.
2. Dry shampoo and sea salt spray are the perfect products for second day hair.
A little oil absorbing dry shampoo on your roots and texturizing sea salt spray on your ends gives you a perfect tousled look. Summer hair is more carefree, it doesn't need to look "done".
3. Braids!!!
French braids, braided pigtails, a mohawk braid, crown braid...they are all beautiful ways to stay stylish and put together in the summertime. I prefer to braid hair when it is wet because it stays put easier. Plus, when you take the braids out it the waves look awesome! If you aren't a strong braider, watch some You Tube tutorials or have your stylist show you some tips.
4. Don't wear it up the same way every day.
Wearing your hair up in the same style puts tension on your hair and can cause breakage. Change it up when you use hair ties.
5. Hats!!!
If you are going to be in the sun for an extended time, hats are a great way to protect your hair, especially if it is color treated. There are even SPF hair products!
6. Get your hair wet with tap water before you expose it to chlorine or salt water.
If your hair is wet with tap water and leave in conditioner, it will absorb less chlorine or salt.
7. Clarifying Shampoo is your friend if you swim a lot.
Malibu makes a great Swimmers shampoo, for adults and kids. Swim Team anyone?? Then you need this product.
8. If you are tempted to chop off all of your hair because of the heat, remember this: It needs to be short enough to be off of the back of your neck.
I suggest keeping it long enough to pull up completely OR cutting it short enough that your neck is exposed. That mid-length cut may be cute, but you won't have as many options for escaping the heat.
9. If you don't like to style your hair, save the bangs for the Fall.
Nobody looks cute with sweaty strands of hair plastered to their forehead.
